CMYK vs RGB: The Prepress Color Guide for Flawless Commercial Printing

Why RGB Screen Colors Can Never Exactly Match Print Inks

Computer monitors, smartphones, and digital cameras emit light in the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) additive color model. Commercial printing presses, by contrast, apply physical ink in the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) subtractive model. Understanding this distinction is vital before sending your artwork to print for products like Standard Business Cards or Standard Flyers.

The Color Gamut Mismatch

The RGB light spectrum is considerably wider than the CMYK ink spectrum. Electric neon greens, fluorescent pinks, and ultra-bright cobalt blues that look radiant on a backlit iPhone screen will naturally shift to slightly muted tones when translated onto paper fibers. To avoid unexpected shifts, always create your design files in CMYK (FOGRA39 or Coated GRACoL) from the start.

The Secret to Rich Blacks vs 100% K Black

  • Standard Black (C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100%): Essential for small body text (under 14pt) and barcodes to ensure crisp, registration-free sharpness.
  • Rich Black (C:40 M:30 Y:20 K:100%): Used for large background flood areas, thick headers, and dark graphic panels to achieve deep, velvety darkness on products like Matte Business Cards.
